Transforming a Basement Bathroom in Peckham Rye: A Calm and Uplifting Retreat
Tags
In this London home in Peckham Rye, we were tasked with transforming a basement bathroom into a space that goes beyond functionality—creating a sanctuary that is both calming and uplifting. Our approach combined thoughtful design, high-quality materials, and practical functionality to craft a bathroom that feels like a true retreat.
Designing for Space, Flow, and Wellbeing
The first step in this home renovation in London was to optimise the basement layout for comfort and usability. At the entrance, a gently curved shower with a built-in seat, recessed niches, and a ceiling-mounted shower head immediately sets a tone of relaxation. Across the room, a freestanding bath and a well-positioned toilet are balanced opposite one another, while a long marble countertop accommodates dual sinks—perfectly combining elegance with practicality.
By carefully considering flow and functionality, the bathroom was designed to feel spacious and inviting, even while serving the needs of two users simultaneously. This approach demonstrates how design and build projects in London can transform challenging spaces, such as basements, into beautiful and functional areas.
Materiality and Texture: Creating a Soothing Atmosphere
Material choices were central to achieving the desired atmosphere. The natural flooring with wooden insets brings warmth and tactility, while lime-wash resin on the walls and surfaces ensures durability while offering a soft, velvety finish. A window opening onto the courtyard allows natural light to filter in, highlighting textures and enhancing the overall sense of calm.
Soft textures, natural materials, and subtle contrasts were used throughout to create a space that is both timeless and inviting—perfectly aligning with the principles of thoughtful home renovation and interior design in London.
A Bathroom Designed for Everyday Rituals
The generous width of the basement bathroom allowed us to design a space that accommodates both personal care and relaxation. Whether it’s a quiet morning routine or a long, restorative evening bath, the room adapts seamlessly to the rhythms of everyday life.
This project exemplifies how a basement can be reimagined into something far beyond its original function. Through careful planning, material selection, and attention to atmosphere, we created a bathroom that feels welcoming, timeless, and deeply connected to wellbeing.
