Across our design and renovation projects in London, staircases are never treated as purely functional elements. The Modern Staircase: Structure and Craftsmanship
In a recent modern loft conversion in London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, the staircase was designed as both a structural element and a sculptural centrepiece. Built entirely in timber, it replaces the typical narrow access with a freestanding, self-supporting form that rises elegantly through the space.
The design was carefully engineered to maximise head height while maintaining fluidity and comfort. Crafted by specialist joiners, the continuous handrail was shaped and finished by hand, sanded to a perfectly smooth surface, and sealed with natural varnish to preserve the warmth of the wood. Its geometry—a refined balance between a U-shape and spiral form—creates movement and visual rhythm, reflecting a distinctly modern approach to craftsmanship.
Visible from every angle of the corridor, the staircase acts as both structure and sculpture—minimal, confident, and timeless.
The Timeless Staircase: Finishing and Atmosphere
In another London renovation, for a staircase in Hillway in the London Borough of Camden, the staircase was reimagined with a softer, classic style that focused on finishes and ambiance. A plush, elegant carpet now lines the steps, while warm, integrated lighting illuminates each tread, creating a gentle glow that enhances both safety and atmosphere.
This design balances traditional comfort with contemporary refinement. The craftsmanship lies in the detailing—the precision of the carpet edges, the seamless lighting integration, and the perfect proportion between riser and tread. The result is a staircase that feels intimate and welcoming, its classic elegance elevated through thoughtful modern touches.
