Transforming a Home with Care in a Conservation Area

Design and Build London London conservation area London home renovation

This project began with a simple but important question: how can an existing home be adapted for contemporary living without losing the character that makes it special? Located within a conservation area, the house called for a careful, respectful approach — one that prioritised design quality and everyday comfort over dramatic structural change.

The focus of the refurbishment was the ground floor, reimagined to better support modern life through improved flow, functionality and light. Rather than reinventing the home entirely, the design strategy centred on subtle yet impactful interventions. A redesigned kitchen, the removal of an internal wall and the introduction of a new cloakroom within the utility area allowed the spaces to breathe, creating a more open and intuitive layout while retaining the home’s original proportions.

Throughout the property, new flooring and a full redecoration establish a calm, cohesive interior palette, while all bathrooms were completely renewed to bring a fresh, contemporary feel. Attention was also given to how the house is experienced on arrival and exit, with both the front and rear entrances thoughtfully reworked to strengthen the connection between inside and out.

As part of the wider vision, the design explores opportunities to further enhance natural light, including the potential replacement of existing external doors at ground floor level and the introduction of a skylight on the second floor. Given the conservation setting, these elements are being carefully developed alongside a planning application to ensure any external changes remain sensitive, proportionate and well considered.

Interior design plays a central role in shaping the character of the home. Furniture layouts are carefully planned to support daily routines, while bespoke joinery is introduced selectively — most notably in the kitchen and master bedroom — to add a tailored feel without overwhelming the space. Moodboards guide material choices, colours and finishes, ensuring the final result feels timeless, elegant and genuinely liveable.

From the earliest design conversations through to defining the scope of works and outline costs, this refurbishment reflects a balanced, design-led approach to residential renovation. It demonstrates how thoughtful planning, attention to detail and respect for context can transform a home in a way that feels natural, enduring and deeply personal — especially within the constraints and opportunities of a conservation area.
