The Design Behind a Country House Restoration in Umbria

Construction has now begun on our latest country house restoration in Tuoro sul Trasimeno, marking an important milestone in the life of this project. While the first signs of transformation are appearing on site, this feels like the right moment to step back and reflect on the ideas that have shaped the design from the very beginning.

For many of our international clients, restoring a country house in Umbria is not simply about renovating a building. It is about creating a place to return to—a home where family and friends can gather, celebrate milestones, and reconnect with the slower rhythm of life that makes the Umbrian countryside so special.

The architecture exists to support that way of living.

A Home That Belongs to Its Landscape

Every successful country house begins with its setting.

Long before we considered materials or interiors, we studied how the house sits within the landscape: the changing light throughout the day, the views across the surrounding countryside, and the relationship between the building, the garden and the future outdoor living spaces.

Rather than imposing a new architecture, our ambition is to strengthen the dialogue between the house and its surroundings. Large openings frame the landscape, terraces become extensions of the interior, and every principal room is designed to maintain a visual connection with nature.

The landscape is not simply something to look at—it becomes part of everyday life.

Designing for Family and Friends

One of the recurring themes in our work is the idea of the family retreat.

Many clients come to Umbria searching for more than a second home. They imagine a place where children and grandchildren return every summer, where friends gather around a long table for dinner beneath the trees, and where ordinary weekends become lasting memories.

Designing for this way of living requires more than generous rooms. It means creating spaces that bring people together naturally while also offering moments of privacy and calm.

The most successful country houses balance both.

Preserving Character, Improving Everyday Living

Historic rural houses possess an authenticity that cannot be recreated. Their stone walls, simple proportions and connection to the land are the qualities that first inspire people to fall in love with them.

Our role is not to erase that history but to reveal it.

Behind the restored fabric of the building, contemporary interventions quietly improve comfort, energy performance and functionality. New layouts encourage modern family life, while discreet building services ensure the house performs to contemporary standards without compromising its character.

The best restoration is often the one that feels as though it has always belonged.

From Drawings to Reality

Now that construction has begun, these ideas are leaving the drawing board and becoming part of the building itself.

As walls are carefully opened, original materials are revealed and new spaces begin to emerge, every decision on site is measured against the vision established at the start of the project.

Good restoration is rarely about dramatic gestures. It is about hundreds of thoughtful decisions that respect the past while preparing a house for the future.

Over the coming months, we will continue sharing the progress of this restoration as the project evolves from concept to completed home—a country house designed not only to endure, but to become the setting for generations of family life in Umbria.
